Date Position

Die File Marks By The Ear

Die Chip To The Rigth Of Y Of LIBERTY

Rim Break Between 4:00 and 4:45

The second die pairing of Obverse 38, where Obverse 38 has now developed a rim break between 4:00 and 4:45.  Obverse 38 is identified by date placement at B, die file marks that extend from the northeast to the southwest by the ear and a die chip to the right of the Y of LIBERTY.

Reverse AAAG is rotated 10 degrees clockwise.

Comments:   During mid November 2018, David Killough submitted the above plate coin for inclusion in this book based on the obverse rim break.  Upon examination of David's coin, I was able to identify the Obverse as Obverse 38, which is now paired with Reverse AAAG.  Obverse 38 was initially in service paired with Reverse AP during the Variety 40 die pairing.  I suspect Reverse AP may have been retired due to a subsequent die break between 4:30 and 7:00 and replaced by a fresher Reverse AAAG.

Variety 83 may be characterized by the more heavily die flow lined Obverse 38 and the fresher Reverse AAAG.  The difference in die states between Obverse 38 and Reverse AAAG are compared below:
