Die Crack from 4:30 to 7:00

Die Crack from 11:30

Obverse 38 is identified by date placement at B and die file marks that extend from the northeast to the southwest by the ear.  Obverse 38 has developed numerous rim breaks.

Reverse AP is rotated 8 degrees clockwise.  Reverse AP develops the following die cracks:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 4:30, through the lower wreath and exiting through the arrow quill to the rim at 7:00.
2.  Die crack from the rim at 11:30 to the top left of the shield.

Comments:  Obverse 38 is one of several obverse dies from 1863 to exhibit die file marks by the ear.  These die file marks by the ear appear on several obverses throughout various years and seem to be associated with a procedural mint operation.

Obverse 38 will later be in service paired with Reverse AAAG during the Variety 83 die pairing.

Variety 40 was first brought to my attention by Craig McClain, who kindly submitted his coin for attribution and inclusion in this book during mid August 2015.

Plate Coin:  Craig McClain Collection, VF30
