Obverse 73 is observed with date placement at B. Obverse 73 has developed die breaks atop feathers 8 and 9, with the beginning of a break atop feather 6.
Obv. 73.2: Obverse 73 has developed heavier die flow lines and a break has now formed atop feather 6.

Reverse AAW has developed a small die break located under the right arm of CEN(T) and the following die cracks:
1. Die crack in the right wreath extends downward from the oak leaves, through the middle arrowhead and to the lowest arrowhead.
2. Radial die crack from the rim at 6:00 extends upward to the ribbon knot.
3. Die crack extending from the right arm of CEN(T) into the right wreath.
Rev. AAW.2: Reverse AAW has developed heavier die flow lines.

Comments: Eighth feather tip die breaks occurred predominantly on 1899 obverse dies, with smaller numbers of late nineteenth and early twentieth century obverses exhibiting breaks at the eighth feather tip. The Obverse 73 ninth feather tip break is extremely uncommon in comparison to the usually seen eighth feather tip breaks.

Variety 74 was first identified by this author during late June 2014.

During mid May 2020, David Killough submitted two examples of Variety 74 that were higher in grade than the previous Variety 74 Plate Coin. One coin exhibited a similar die state as the former plate coin and the second exhibited a later die state. Both examples are now respectively plated as the Variety 74 and 74a Plate Coins.
