Radial Die Crack from 3:00

Die Crack from 5:00

Radial Die Crack from 9:30

Obverse 20 is observed with date placement at LH.  Obverse 20 develops a small die break between S of STATES and the first feather as well as the following die crack:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 1:00 connecting the tops of OF.

Reverse T has acquired clash marks to the right of the denomination and develops the following die cracks:
1.  Heavy radial die crack from the rim at 3:00 through the wreath and touching the top right of the T of CENT.
2.  Die crack from 5:00 upward through the wreath stem and ribbon end.
3.  Heavy radial die crack from the rim at 9:30 through the wreath.

Comments:  Variety 18 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during early October 2016 for inclusion in this book based on the obverse 20 die breakage and reverse T die cracking.  Examination of David's coin reveals that variety 18 is in a late die state with associated die cracking of reverse T and the breakage of obverse 20.  The small die break of obverse 20 is rare in occurrence and most likely a result from a clashing event with reverse T.  Though no clash marks are evident on the obverse, I belive the clash marks faded due the combination of coin grade and advancement of moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, F12
