Obverse 10 Die Crack Mapping

Retained Cud Between 7:45 and 9:15

Retained Cud Between 9:30 and 11:30

Obverse 10 is observed with date placement at B.  Obverse 10 develops the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack connecting the tops of AME of AMERICA.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 9:45 connecting the tops of NITED of UNITED.

Type II Reverse J is rotated 8 degrees clockwise and develops the following two retained cuds:
1.  Retained cud between 7:45 and 9:15.
2.  Retained cud between 9:30 and 11:30.

Comments:  Type II Reverse J has continued in service despite the development of two retained breaks.  The occurence of more than one break on a working die is rare, since a working die would be retired from service after suffering one break.  I have only attributed one other die with two breaks, which was Reverse AG from the 1888 Variety 31 die pairing.

Type II Variety 9 was first identified by John Miner, who listed the above plate coin for auction during early February 2018.  Keith Bock, who successfully won the auction, was extremely kind in submitting the above plate coin during late February 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the two die breaks of Type II Reverse J.
